Treating the Common Aches and Pains of Pregnancy

Bon Secours In Motion Physical Therapy, Women's Health, pregnancy pain management, urinary incontinencePregnancy places great demands on a woman’s body. More than 50% of pregnant women experience back pain or some orthopaedic problem. Common pregnancy complaints include lower back pain, hip and knee discomfort, pelvic pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, urinary incontinence, sacroiliac pain, and pain or tingling in the hands, legs, and feet.

Many times the pain is a result of increased elasticity in the soft tissues of the body and postural changes as the baby grows.

While pain is common during pregnancy, it is not normal. Physical therapy designed specifically for the pregnant woman is often recommended to treat the aches and pains that arise during pregnancy.

Common physical therapy treatments for these pains include:

  • Manual Therapy
  • Myofascial Release techniques to increase soft tissue flexibility and mobility
  • Aquatic Therapy
  • Exercises to improve strength and mobility as well as improving postural alignment and balance
  • Suggestions for proper body mechanics and positioning to minimize pain and discomfort
  • Assistance in fitting of maternity belts and supports
