Stamp Out Confusion in the Bread Section

Multi-grain. Stoneground. Wheat flour.

It’s OK. You can admit to being confused in the bread section. It’s really not that hard if you don’t know what you need to consider.

Here’s the truth: whole grains are good for you. They can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. For weight conscious folks, whole grains help people maintain weight loss.

And finding whole grain products is a lot easier if you look for the Whole Grain Stamp on food packages.

The basic stamp means the product contains at least 8 grams – a half serving – of whole grain, according to the Whole Grains Council, a nonprofit consumer advocacy group. The 100 percent stamp indicates that all of the grain ingredients are whole grains.

Without the stamp, identifying whole grain foods can be tricky. In fact, in some cases, you can’t tell from the list of ingredients what percentage of a food product is actually from whole grains.

I’ll stick to looking for the stamp.
