Mike was raised in Virginia Beach and graduated from Kempsville High School, where he was named Virginia Beach High School athlete of the year by the Virginia Beach Sports Club. He also won All Tidewater Player of the Year honors in Football and won a Beach district wrestling championship.
Mike participated in football and wrestling at Princeton University before being sidelined with injuries. He has done extensive studies on rehabilitation of the athlete including an internship at the Hughston Sports Medicine Hospital in Columbus, GA.
