Orthopaedic Rehab Strengthens New Knees
Studies continue to suggest that a carefully focused training program can make a huge difference in a patient’s success following knee replacement surgery. By participating in a good pre-op series of muscle strengthening exercises, patients have made leaps and bounds in their recovery after their surgery date. replacement.
In one key study published by Arthritis Care & Research in 2009, patients who underwent “six weeks of progressive muscle strengthening aimed at the quadriceps” did much better in recovery than patients given conventional treatment. In fact, those who underwent a muscle strengthening regimen were able to recover a normal level of function for their age following the joint replacement surgery.
At In Motion we don’t underestimate the importance of good pre- and post-op care for joint replacement patients. If you are scheduling a knee replacement, ask your physician about muscle strengthening and the possibility of working with a personal trainer in the weeks leading up to surgery. It could have a huge impact on your physical rehabilitation with your new knee!
