Increase in Hospitalizations for Children with High Blood Pressure

According to a new study in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension, the number of children hospitalized for high blood pressure has almost doubled over the past decade and has mimicked the equally dramatic rise in hypertension among American adults.

In addition to increased hospitalization rates, the team also found that the average length of stay for children with hypertension was double that of children with other illnesses, like pneumonia, appendicitis and asthma.

Scientists couldn’t account for the exact rise in hypertension among children, but speculate that obesity and poor nutrition played a key role in their findings.

With such staggering statistics facing the United States, experts are advocating for preventative health education for parents. Families and primary care physicians need to be advocating healthy lifestyle habits in order to prevent the increase of hypertension among children. It’s important because children with high blood pressure are at incredibly high risk for high blood pressure as adults, which carries extensive health complications.
