Experts In Motion – Meet Beth Helm!
Beth Helm, PT, MSR, is the clinical coordinator at our very busy and very popular Hilltop clinic – located in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach. To schedule an appointment with Beth – call us at (757) 437-0471.
How long have you worked at In Motion?
Since October 2009, when we opened up the Virginia Beach Hilltop clinic. I have loved it since.
What is your role and what are your credentials?
I am the clinical coordinator at the Hilltop In Motion and I am a Physical Therapist. I graduated with a BS from Frostburg State University in Maryland (go Bobcats!) with a Master’s in PT from Medical University of South Carolina. I then went back and received my Doctorate in PT from University of St. Augustine in Florida. I specialize in manual therapy, vestibular therapy, foot and ankle rehab and running analysis.
Do you currently play any sports or how do you stay in shape?
I love, love, love to surf-even in the winter. If not surfing then paddleboarding, and when I can’t do that I will go swimming–anything involving water sports. I played volleyball in college and still enjoy that when I can get to a court. I also enjoy running, biking, and competing in triathlons and I am working on getting back into that, but right now my ten month old daughter is running me around a lot!
Do you have any interesting hobbies, talents, accomplishments?
Doing a three month bike tour in Europe with my husband is on of my greatest accomplishments. We camped, stayed in hostels, and slept on trains to be able to see as much as possible. We started in the Netherlands and biked and made our way east to Poland, South to Italy, and detoured in Germany for a long Octoberfest. We loved Europe and are now saving for the next trip, hopefully even longer this time—don’t tell Marne. Hi, Marne!
What is your favorite thing about working at In Motion?
The people I work with are the best–we have a great team. Our patients can tell that we actually enjoy each other, as well as the work that we are doing to help people.
What is something about you that might surprise your colleagues?
That if I was not working as a PT I would be a marine biologist, studying dolphins in the Bahamas or running an orphanage in Nicaragua through my church, Grace Bible. I went on a mission trip there and it changed my life. Also, I got married to my husband in a wetsuit in the Outer Banks, with our first married kiss in 30 degree ocean water.
Do you have any pets?
A terrific rescue dog named Chai who just turned eleven and was my first baby. He is a beagle boxer mix and all heart.
What is the last book that you read?
Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference by Cordelia Fine. It’s a great book and shows that so many of cultural stereotypes are inaccurate regarding women. I want my daughter to grow up believing she can do anything she wants to not what society expects her to because she is female.
We all try to be healthy, but if you could pick one indulgence what would it be?
It would have to be pizza, especially from North End Pizza at the Oceanfront.
