Eating for Your Workout

What you eat before exercising is important; it needs to supply you with enough energy to perform well throughout your entire game or gym session.

A good workout snack or meal before exercise is carbohydrate-rich with small amounts of protein. The carbs will help boost muscle stores and fuel your performance. Small amounts of protein will help build and repair muscle tissue. Eating the right balance of protein before a workout can help you avoid muscle soreness afterwards.

Suggestions for Pre-exercise Foods

3-4 Hours Before

  • Fruit smoothie with granola
  • Oatmeal with skim milk
  • Lean hamburger on a bun
  • Turkey sandwich

30-60 Minutes Before

  • Sports drink
  • Piece of fruit
  • Sports gel or bar

Experiment to determine what snacks work best for you before a workout. Different foods and drinks may have variable impact on your performance, so feel free to figure out what works best for your activity!
