Lymphedema Therapy after Breast Cancer Surgery

Each year, In Motion therapists treat many women who have had a breast surgery. Lymphedema therapy is specifically for women who have had a breast cancer diagnosis and breast surgery.

The physical therapist assesses each patient’s strength, range of motion and swelling. In some cases, scar tissue affects mobility.

Typically, the therapist uses massage techniques to help the body’s natural tendency to carry excess fluid away from the swollen area. Mechanical pumps can also be used. The therapist will introduce the patient to stretches and exercises that will help.
