Pediatricians Push for Recess
In the latest edition of Pediatrics The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) speaks out against a growing trend in schools to drop recess and use the time to teach subjects.
Under pressure to perform on standardized testing, many teachers are re-purposing recess time in the classroom for additional instruction.
But medical experts warn that recess is an important part of the school day that is necessary and important to help children learn and grow. Some of the benefits of recess include cognitive improvements, social and emotional experiences, and physical – as well as creative – exercise for restless students.
Catherine Ramstetter, PhD., a health educator at the Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Cincinnati, says “Recess promotes a healthy learning environment. Importantly, recess should be used as a complement to physical education classes, not a substitute… It would be ideal if every school had deep pockets to build huge, amazing playgrounds. But every kid will play differently anyway, and every school doesn’t have the resources. We need to protect recess as it benefits the whole child.”
