Overcoming Arthritis Pain with Rehab

While there are many types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, lyme disease and gout, the most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which usually occurs in people 65 and older but can affect people of all ages.

Like other chronic conditions, osteoarthritis has no single cause. Genetics definitely play a role, but an individual’s lifestyle — what you eat, how much exercise you get, if you maintain a healthy weight, if you smoke — has a tremendous impact on whether or not you develop the disease. Serious injuries to joints or repetitive movements over a long period of time also can lead to osteoarthritis. Inactivity and obesity can also contribute to arthritis pain.

The most common symptoms of arthritis are stiffness, especially first thing in the morning, and pain. The joints most commonly affected are the lower back, hips, knees and feet. Without treatment arthritis sufferers can suffer a loss of function, tissue damage and pain from swelling.

At Bon Secours In Motion, our team of physical therapists have developed a specialized program designed to help arthritis sufferers improve mobility while reducing pain, stiffness and discomfort. For those who are struggling to live independently with serious osteoarthritis or joint pain, our experts also build independence and quality of life with occupational therapy and joint protection techniques.
