Social Stressors Increase Risk of Obesity Among Young Girls

New research published in Pediatrics, links social stress with an increased risk of obesity in younger kids – especially girls.

After analyzing public date for over 1,600 preschoolers, researchers linked the presence of social stressors in the home, like unstable housing, a parent’s depression, substance abuse, or a father in jail, with an increased risk of childhood obesity. The risk was significantly higher among little girls who had more than one stressor in their life.

There was no link found between social stress in the home and obesity in boys.
