Although hip arthritis can cause significant pain, it does not always lead to surgery if it’s discovered in the early stages, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The AAOS recommends the following nonsurgical treatments for hip arthritis:

  • Allow plenty of time for your hip or hips to heal.
  • Use physical therapy to strengthen your joints and improve your range of motion.
  • Ask your physician if a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug could help ease your pain.
  • Lose weight if you carry too many pounds. Excess weight can make arthritis pain worse.
  • Get enough sleep every night.
