How Important is Flexibility?
A lack of flexibility can restrict your most basic movements. While flexibility does not prevent muscle injuries there are some major benefits to having properly stretched and flexible muscles:
- Easier Movement
The stronger and more flexible your body is the more easily you can move. For example, if the muscles around your joints are flexible you can move them with less effort, because there is less resistance. Even the flexibility results in a small amount of reduction in effort, if you are a triathlete, it could end up taking minutes off your final time. - Better Posture
Oftentimes individuals who suffer from back pain due to bad posture lack muscle flexibility and strength. By strengthening stiff upper back muscles and building flexibility, you can relieve soreness from your neck, shoulders, and back. - Increased Range of Motion
The range of the motion is a secondary benefit of stretching. It comes eventually from regular and thorough stretching. Remember: you should not stretch your muscles without first warming up! Spend five minutes or so on a light cardio workout to get your body warm. Then, while stretching, hold each position for about 30-60 seconds.
After 10 to 30 seconds of stretching, your muscle starts to release and feel elongated. Every serious athlete should incorporate a serious, full body stretching routine, which takes about 30 minutes or an hour, into their training schedule.
