Workplace Ergonomics: Keyboard Positioning
Working in an office may not seem like a risky endeavor, but a poorly fitted desk or poorly positioned keyboard can put even the most sedentary employee at risk of developing some painful conditions, like pinched nerves and carpal tunnel syndrome. One of the simplest ergonomic adjustments an office worker can make to help avoid developing a condition like carpal tunnel is the proper arrangement and positioning of your computer keyboard and mouse.
In order to prevent the development of carpal tunnel due to an improper keyboard positioning, here is a guide to help minimize your chances of self-injury:
- Position the keyboard directly in front of you, so that your arms hang comfortably at your sides and you are able to type with your shoulders relaxed.
- Adjust your keyboard slope so that your forearms, wrists, and hands are comfortably positioned without being strained.
- Align your mouse with the keyboard, so that you do not have to reach too far to move from the keys to the mouse.
