Pregnancy Pain
Pregnancy places great demands on a woman’s body. More than 50% of pregnant women experience back pain or some orthopaedic problem. Common complaints during pregnancy include lower back pain, hip and knee discomfort, pelvic pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, urinary incontinence, sacroiliac pain, and pain or tingling in the hands, legs, and feet.
While pain is common during pregnancy, it is not normal. Many times the pain is a result of increased elasticity in the soft tissues of the body and postural changes as the baby grows. Physical therapy designed specifically for the pregnant woman is often recommended to treat the aches and pains that arise during pregnancy. Our experienced physical therapists work with women to stabilize their pelvic floor and abdominal muscles, to improve their body mechanics, and to decrease pregnancy-related pain.
Common physical therapy treatments for these pains may include:
- Manual Therapy
- Myofascial Release techniques to increase soft tissue flexibility and mobility
- Aquatic Therapy
- Exercises to improve strength and mobility as well as improving postural alignment and balance
- Suggestions for proper body mechanics and positioning to minimize pain and discomfort
- Assistance in fitting of maternity belts and supports
In Motion’s comprehensive program also offers instruction in circulation and breathing exercises and relaxation techniques. In addition to treating pregnant women, this program incorporates post-partum pregnancy therapy, which includes muscle strengthening exercises following cesarean or vaginal delivery.
