5 Ways to Dine Out the Healthy Way
When it comes to dining out the temptation to stray from your diet can be overwhelming. A couple servings from the complimentary bread basket, a single sugary cocktail, one indulgent dessert – before you know it you’ve accidentally consumed an extra thousand calories.
Sticking to a healthy diet is particularly important if you have a health concern like diabetes that demands certain restrictions and limitations. To help you avoid bad decisions and stay on track, The American Dietetic Association offers these five healthy tips for dining out:
- Decide to make a good decision before you walk in the door.
Opt for an entree salad or other healthy dish that includes something from each of the main food groups. - Make healthy substitutions if possible.
If choosing a sandwich, top it with fresh vegetables and low-fat condiments or salad dressings. - Don’t splurge on a side.
Choose healthy side dishes, such as a baked potato topped with vegetables, a side salad, or some fruit. Skip the fries. - Whenever possible choose low-calorie dishes.
- Ask for a box.
Eat only a portion of your meal, saving the rest for later.
The most important thing to keep in mind when it comes to eating out healthily is that you are in control of your own choices. Don’t let sinful menu items distract you from your goal: a healthy life.
