Alva, a native of Hampton, Virginia, began her career as a speech-language pathologist in 1981. She has a special area of interest in patients with head and neck cancers, voice disorders, stroke and dementia. She chose her career after becoming fascinated with the opportunity to help patients with speech and language disorders. Alva takes pride in being able to relate to people of diverse backgrounds and believes this is one of the reasons for her success as a speech-language pathologist.
